Westleigh, after a poor match last Saturday, had to bounce back. Melton with a lot of young players, had several county players, who have not moved up into men’s hockey. They would at Westleigh. With Jonny in a rare showing due to Garin not available balanced things up. The game started at a fairly slow pace by both teams. Certainly Westleigh seemed to be off the pace and very slow. At a slow speed the hockey ideas were still good. One player not slow again was Nikki, who against another county player 3 years older matched him all the way. Real battle. Also, the defence did really well. Melton did score first but again Westleigh stood up to the task with Emma very good on the right side never stopped and with Chester behind her a solid team. We even managed to get Jake on for some experience. The game did get better and both teams played some good hockey. Nikki making a lot of our chances and scoring again from short corners with great delight from some senior players watch on from the last game. Prisha nearly met a perfect far post ball. Melton did go down to 10 after both umpires had enough of repeat tackles from the wrong side and one of the county players walked. The best player for Melton tried his hardest to score but even 1 v 1 with Jonny he came second best, even when he resorted to flicking at goal, still they were pushed wide. He did get one at the end which made it a nice draw, no team deserved to win or lose. Lots of young players on the pitch so in the end a great days hockey.
