Start with a win!

Having a few players out with COVID for the first game of the season wasn't ideal but this did not stop Westleigh. We stuck to the task and Westleigh were the dominant team from the start but failed to convert chances. Leicester did get into the game and did show that their young players have real talent. Today, older heads won and shots though looked amazing in the air never went near the Westleigh Goal. The core of Westleigh worked hard but we were struggling to convert. Dave didn’t even hit the ball on a short with a hand injury causing him issues all day. Nick was a steady head with younger Ryan full of energy and ran hard all day. We played one defender in Dinesh for most of the game who’s experience proved invaluable. At last a ball with Dave against old pal Gill proved the turning point. Dave showed him a clean for pace (he is senior of Dave by 10yrs). Dave drove forwards nutmegged the defender and roofed the ball off the GK head into the net. Ryan then after learning to drive hard did so all the way and pushed the ball hard through a busy D for the Keeper to miss it. Patrick, who is a great player loaned to us, finished it. Leicester were not without their good points , really good young lads, who will only get better. They are already very good. They were rewarded late when their most talented young player ran all the way past Nick and pulled it back to an empty net as Jonathan had covered near post. Really nice match against local rivals with good food and hosting afterwards.
